<image:caption>KITADA’S KAU KAU KORNER. Ethel’s gigantic smile and Mrs. Kitada’s giant heart. The most delicious food I’ve ever tasted. Two reasons I didn’t eat there every day: It would have killed me, being smothered in beef gravy and loaded up with macaroni salad, heavily flavored with Best Foods mayonnaise. Secondly, they would never take my money, ever! . . . and then battle with me for trying to leave a tip. I didn’t want to take advantage. The Kitadas were the best part of Makawao to me. If anyone ever made me feel loved it was them. I miss you. — Eddie Flotte. Makawao artist</image:caption>

A silver plant with flowers, you can only find it here, on Haleakala. The lable also has the words written on it “haleakala Dairy.” Was he milk good that Haleakala dairy would give to their customers? The bottle is old looking. There are stains on it. The lable is faded. This one bottle contains a large amount of Vocabulary. One small object, Yet With a large amount of words. By Luz Bridgford</image:caption>

<image:title>Digital Exhibits - Maui Branding Irons - The symbols are simple. ‘Ulupalakua Ranch’s brand looks like a down-hanging horseshoe. Haleakala¯ Ranch has two: its original “ac” brand represents two of the ranch’s founders, and the “roofed H” symbol distinguishes its artificially inseminated heifers. Well over a hundred Maui brands are registered with the Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture.</image:title>

<image:title>Digital Exhibits - Maui Branding Irons - On Maui’s big ranches the branding round-up takes place two or three times a year, when calves are about four months old and ready to be “weaned out.” Cowboys come from other ranches to share the ritual. The work is gritty and dangerous, as it often involves wrangling five or six hundred calves in a single day. The heifers become breeding stock. The males become steers. As one rancher said, “It’s one of two bad days in the otherwise blissful life of a Maui cow.”</image:title>

<image:title>Digital Exhibits - Maui Branding Irons - For thousands of years, humans have branded cattle as an undeniable claim of ownership. The ranchers of East Maui continue this practice today, using the same ancient technology – a hand-forged length of iron, flame-hot, which stamps an indelible symbol into the hide of bovine hindquarters.</image:title>

<image:title>Digital Exhibits - Maui Branding Irons - In the mid-nineteenth century, Hawaiian cowboys had to manhandle feral cattle, fierce and big-horned. These intrepid paniolo branded their captures as a mark of conquest. And yet, even in today’s more settled times, branding is still necessary. Large tracts of leeward Haleakala remain open-grazed by both branded and feral cows. Ranching, Maui-style, is still a brawny, little-mechanized industry. You can regard branding irons as a symbol of Maui’s open spaces and close-held traditions.</image:title>

Above the table, she placed a picture of The Last Supper. The actual picture that hung from Vovo's kitchen hung in the MHM exhibit, having been kept by Alice. Religion was an essential part of Vovo's life, she practiced at Saint Joseph Churcha and at home. She blessed every loaf of Portuguese sweet bread before it was baked.</image:title>

<image:title>Digital Exhibits - Grandma Vovo’s Kitchen - Vovo and her family lived in a plantation camp which shared a communal forno (seen outside the exhibit window). Each family within the camp were assigned a day of the week to use the oven. Because it was regularly used, the forno was kept fired, fueled by guava and eucalyptus wood supplied by the the plantation. The Fernandez' forno, almost six feet high and nearly that in diameter, baked ten loaves of VoVo's bread at a time. Used by the family daily at mealtime, smothered with Vovo's homemade butter, Alice describes it as "oh so ono!"</image:title>

<image:title>Past Exhibits - Grandma Vovo’s Kitchen: Portuguese Family Memories - The Makawao History Museum is proud to announce our latest exhibit, open to the public, “Grandma Vovo’s Kitchen: Portuguese Family Memories.” Grandma Vovo’s kitchen, lovingly described in Alice Tavares’ book, Hub of My Wheel, has been recreated in the Museum. The exhibit is representative of what kitchens were like in the upcountry area during the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s from the cast iron sink to the oilcloth table covering. Friday, March 2, the museum held a small reception for Alice Tavares’ family. Pictured are Alice Tavares and exhibit creators, Cheri Attix and Darrell Orwig.</image:title>

<image:title>Past Exhibits - Rodeo Exhibit - The Makawao Fourth of July Rodeo has been a remarkable success from its very beginning. One Sunday in July of 1956, 2,000 fans (four times more than organizers expected and had seats for) watched paniolo from three islands battle it out at the first official Makawao Rodeo. To kick-start this groundbreaking event, the fifty cowboy competitors paraded into the arena on horseback to the sounds of the Star Spangled Banner, led by Harold (Oskie) Rice carrying the American flag and Levy Holomalia the Hawaiian flag.</image:title>

<image:caption>The four buildings that comprise the Makawao Crossroads have a common tie: the name Tam. It was natural that the Chinese, the first ethnic group brought in for plantation labor would be early residents and property owners. Tam Sing, Tam Chow, Tam Yau, Tam Ching, Tam Apo, Apo Liilii, Tam See, Tam Wah Chan, and Tam Tin Fook, all from the village of Sam Chow, were bound together through business partnerships and marriage before the turn of the 20th century. At one time, Chinese merchant families owned all four corners of the Makawao Crossroads. Later immigrant groups joined the Chinese as residents and merchants in Makawao. Pineapple started in the Makawao area after the turn of the 20th century at a number of ranches and small properties. In 1926 Libby, McNeill & Libby began planting in Makawao along with the newly established pineapple division of Haleakalā Ranch and Maui Agricultural Company. The two companies merged to form Maui Pineapple Company. The pineapple workers lived in the town itself and in outlying areas. Makawao town served as both the commercial and social center for workers.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sugar cultivation in Makawao began in 1857 with the East Maui Sugar Plantation also known as the Kaluanui Plantation. The most significant Makawao sugar operation began in 1869, when Henry P. Baldwin and Samuel T. Alexander purchased a 12-acre Hawaiian homestead and the 559-acre Bush Ranch in Sunnyside. These two parcels grew into the giant Alexander & Baldwin Corporation. Pineapple started in the Makawao area after the turn of the 20th century at a number of ranches and small properties. In 1926 Libby, McNeill & Libby began planting in Makawao along with the newly established pineapple division of Haleakalā Ranch and Maui Agricultural Company.
